Ahead of the ACC Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, on Feb. 26-28, the Clemson track team is gearing up to continue its season and solidify itself at the top of the conference.
The team has been making waves this year.
Most notably, Gladys Chepngetich swept ACC weekly honors after producing the second-fastest 800-meter performance in collegiate history — rewriting conference, program and national record books in the process.
Chepngetich raced past the competition at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, after placing third with a time of 1:58.81 in the 800-meter invite.
The mark shattered ACC and Clemson program records, cementing Chepngetich’s place among the most elite middle-distance runners in collegiate history. Her performance propelled her to No. 2 on the NCAA all-time list and currently stands as the fastest 800-meter time in the nation this season.
Breaking the two-minute barrier is a benchmark reserved for the sport’s most accomplished athletes, and Chepngetich did so against one of the deepest fields in the country. Despite finishing third, her time underscores the magnitude of her performance.
On the men’s side, Brian Kweyei delivered a record-setting performance of his own.
Competing in the men’s 800-meter invite, Kweyei captured first place with a time of 1:46.02, breaking another Clemson program record and further elevating the Tigers’ national profile.
His time stands as the second-fastest 800 meters in ACC history, and the fastest mark recorded in the conference since 1989. The performance also moved him into a tie for No. 17 on the NCAA all-time list, placing him among the most accomplished collegiate middle-distance runners ever.
Kweyei ranks No. 7 nationally and sits atop the ACC.
The track team concluded its home season last weekend and will look to carry that momentum onto the postseason stage.
With the ACC Championships approaching, Clemson will shift its focus from chasing times to executing race strategy and maximizing points.
