“Speak Up!” is a weekly collection of student opinions on relevant topics around campus. The Tiger interviews randomly selected students to hear their thoughts on the question at hand.
This week, reporters went to one of the busiest spots on campus, Hendrix Student Center, to hear student opinions.
This time, The Tiger asked: “How comfortable are you with integrating AI tools (like ChatGPT) into your coursework? Is there a place?”
Here’s what students had to say about it:
“I think there is a place for it. I think it’s a very useful tool. It’s really good for inputting class notes and making practice questions, but it’s terrible for writing your work for you and it’s making you dumber.”
Mia Yancey, a junior computer science major
“I also think that there’s a place for it. I think it’s a tool that’s becoming more prevalent, and people need to know how to use it. But as a TA, I see a lot of people with ethical or environmental or other objections to using it.”
Hazel Torek, a junior math and computer science double major
“I think AI is good to give you an outline and to get started in the right direction. As long as you aren’t taking advantage of it and using it for your entire thing, then it can be helpful.”
Tayler Johnson, a sophomore performing arts and political science double major
“I think its place is mostly as a study tool. It can create infinite kinds of questions. I hope people use it responsibly, but I think in the long run, there are a lot of people that aren’t going to use it responsibly.”
Natalie Hudepohl, a sophomore nursing major
