As downtown Clemson has evolved and become more modern with the times, Charles and Al’s Barbershop has stayed the course, holding true to its “old school values” to help win this year’s best barbershop.
Tucked behind the Moe’s on College Avenue and adjacent to the downtown parking deck, Charles and Al’s is rooted in hospitality and tradition, cutting hair since 1970.
“We have old school values and try to treat everybody kindly and respectfully and hold to that more than anything,” Chris Lynch, one of the shop’s barbers, told The Tiger. “And so it’s sort of like an old-school way of doing business. We want to please everybody that we can possibly please.”
That “old-school way of doing business” also applies to the shop’s payment options, as Charles and Al’s only accepts cash. A regular cut is $20, and a crew is $15. Beard trims are $10, and seniors get $1 off their service.
With the shop only having four chairs and a limited staff, patrons have to call in and make an appointment, with most days getting fully booked the morning of.
Whether you are a freshman, faculty or retired, Charles and Al’s wants to give the Clemson community the best possible cut.
