A Clemson tradition returns this Saturday, March 29.
After years away, one of Clemson’s most legendary races is finally making a comeback. The RC and Moonpie Downhill Mile is a unique Clemson tradition where runners take on a 1-mile downhill sprint — with a sweet challenge.
Before the race starts, participants eat a Moon Pie on the president’s lawn before being sent off by a very special guest. At the halfway mark — Sikes Hall — they eat another Moon Pie and drink an ice-cold cola before making their final push to the finish line at The Esso Club, where their final cola or a celebratory beer (for people over 21) awaits as their reward.
The RC and Moonpie Presidential Downhill Mile is more than just a race — it’s a tribute to Clemson history, leadership and tradition. Named in honor of Robert Cook “R.C.” Edwards and his wife, Louise “Moonpie” Edwards, this event celebrates their deep impact on the University and community.
Check-in will begin at the president’s lawn at 10 a.m., and the race itself will start at 11 a.m.
All donations and proceeds from the race will support the Clemson University greatest
needs fund. These gifts allow Clemson to see, and fulfill, needs that arise, whether they are
student-driven ideas, new opportunities or relief in times of distress.
