A 28-year-old resident of Anderson County was arrested in connection with a road rage attempted murder involving an illegally-modified AR-15 rifle, which occurred on Wednesday.
Clemson Police Department charged the individual, Charles Douglas Mace Jr., with attempted murder, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and possession of a machine gun in connection with the event on Thursday, when arrest warrants were obtained.
At 11:46 a.m. on Nov. 19, CPD received several 911 calls reporting a shooting at the intersection of Anderson Highway and Old Stone Church Road, near Dawson Park and 864 Clemson.
The victim of the crime was traveling on Anderson Highway when he was cut off by a gray sedan, according to social media posts made by CPD. The victim honked his horn, upon which the sedan’s driver stopped in the median. The victim continued driving until the traffic light at Old Stone Church Road, “at which point he heard loud bands and saw bullet holes in his windshield,” according to the posts.
The sedan had pulled up behind the victim, then sped past, going south down Pendleton Road.
The victim followed the suspect long enough to get the tag number and car description before meeting with responding officers at a nearby gas station.
A car description of the gray sedan was broadcast over the police radio, and detectives located a car matching the description by utilizing Automatic License Plate Reader data. This information was relayed to Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and within 15 minutes, ACSO deputies located and stopped the car traveling south near Interstate 85 and made a traffic stop.
Mace was the sole occupant and was initially arrested for traffic violations. Upon searching his vehicle, officers found an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun. The rifle had been illegally modified into a machine gun and equipped with a device that collects spent shell casings.

Mace has been transported to the city of Clemson jail for processing.
This is a developing story. The Tiger will update this article with additional information as it becomes available.

That’s not a machine gun. It’s a semi automatic firearm.
