From Saturday game days to weekdays with friends and family, chicken wings have always been a signature meal in the southern college scene. When searching for the Best Wings in Clemson, students turn to Backstreets Pub & Grill.
In a college town filled with restaurants and bars, few places have built a reputation as lasting as Backstreets. Known especially for its wings and relaxed atmosphere, the restaurant has been serving Clemson students, residents and visitors since 1992, and remains a staple of the downtown dining scene. The Tiger spoke with Ryan Shaw, one of Backstreets’ managers, about what makes the restaurant and its wings stand out among Clemson dining options.
“We’re more than just a bar, and we’re more than just a restaurant,” Shaw continued, “we’re trying to make a brand.”
With more than three decades of operation, Backstreets has developed a strong presence in downtown Clemson. The establishment features two levels, with indoor and outdoor seating, allowing customers to gather in a variety of settings. Numerous televisions and memorabilia decorate the space, creating an environment well-suited for social gatherings and sporting events. Shaw said the combination of quality food and atmosphere is what draws customers to the restaurant.
“A lot of people come to Backstreets because they think, ‘it’s good food and then a vibe,’” Shaw told The Tiger.
Backstreets is especially known for its signature wings, which were first introduced to the menu in 2000 and have now become one of the restaurant’s most popular items. Customers can choose from 18 different wing flavors, including both sauces and dry rub options.
The flavors range from mild to intense varieties, allowing customers to find an option that matches their personal preferences. In addition to the regular menu, Backstreets features a rotating flavor of the day every Wednesday as part of its Wing Wednesday promotion, giving visitors a chance to try new and unique combinations.
Wing Wednesday is one of the pub’s most popular weekly traditions, with customers able to purchase a dozen wings for $8.99. The event often creates a lively midweek atmosphere, with groups of students and families filling tables throughout the restaurant.
Many of the sauces and seasonings are prepared in-house, which contributes to the restaurant’s distinctive taste. The wings are cooked fresh to order to ensure a crispy texture and consistent quality. According to Shaw, the kitchen is one of the restaurant’s strongest features.
“We pride ourselves on our kitchen,” Shaw said. Customers often pair their wings with classic sides — such as fries, tater tots and more — to complete the meal.
Backstreets is especially busy during its weekly promotions and events, which attract large numbers of students and local residents. These traditions have helped the restaurant maintain its reputation as a dependable destination in Clemson’s dining scene. Shaw described Backstreets as a business that has continued to grow alongside the Clemson community.
“We’re a good underdog story that’s always been a staple”, Shaw explained. For Shaw, the restaurant’s long-term success comes from the people who continue to support it year after year.
“Make it about the people,” Shaw continued. “I really love the customer base.”
