While women were allowed to attend Clemson University in 1955, there are still no buildings or monuments on campus that are named after or dedicated to a woman. That is, until Clemson made a compromise in 2020 with the WAP College of Business.
The building was named on Oct. 16, 2020. The University claims this name was created after a couple with the same monogram allegedly made a whopping donation of $60 million.
However, it is more likely that the Board of Trustee’s motion was instead a gesture of recognition towards women on campus. Naturally, the college was paying tribute to the hit song “WAP,” gifted to the world by artists Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion and released two months prior to the naming.
With the track still at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time of the announcement, the Board clearly had “WAP” on the mind. The song, which is a celebration of women and their WAPs, was the moment of women’s appreciation that 47.7% of students, women, were waiting for. Zan Beasley, a junior English major, is one of those women.
“Do I think the Business Building was actually named after “WAP”? Absolutely I do,” said Beasley. “Why would Clemson University name a building after someone just because they donated lots of money? Does that really sound like Clemson to you?”
Cardi B said it herself in “WAP,” singing “He got the money, then that’s where I’m headed.”
