Defying all odds and revenging their 78-69 loss at Littlejohn Coliseum earlier this season, the Tigers beat the Virginia Tech (VT) Hokies 67-66 in the first round of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday (March 1).
Clemson won thanks to its dominance in the rebound game, snagging 48 to VT’s 33, and the broad base of talent that it capitalized on; four players got 10 points or more and five players got six rebounds or more. Danielle Edwards led the team with 17 points and three assists and Nelly Perry followed closely behind with 16 points and three assists.
The Hokies were led by power players Regan Magarity, with a game-high 24 points and game-best 14 rebounds, and Chanette Hicks, with 20 points and a game-high five assists.
Edwards scored 10 of the Tigers’ 17 points in the fourth quarter, including their last five points of the game, netting the game-winning free throw with just three seconds left.
According to clemson.edu, this was the Tigers’ first ACC Tournament win since March 5, 2014, also over VT.
The Lady Tigers will have to stay true to their season-defining hashtag #DefyAllOdds in order to continue their success in the ACC Tournament. Their next game will be against the Louisville Cardinals (25-6 (12-4 ACC)), who beat them 60-46 at Littlejohn Coliseum earlier this season.
13th-seeded Clemson (15-15 (3-13 ACC)), after its victory over 12th-seeded VT (17-13 (4-12 ACC)), will play No. 5 seed Louisville tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the HTC Center at Coastal Carolina University.
