Melly Villy has quickly become an icon in Clemson within the past year — but now he’s hit the mainstream and will be performing at Super Bowl 60 next year in Santa Clara, California.
His claim to fame in Clemson comes from a live halftime performance with the Clemson Tiger Band, where he debuted his dissertation mixtape, “Harmonic Resurgence.”
He must have sprung some good fortune into the Clemson football team that day, as the Tigers beat Virginia 48-31.
The iconic show led to students, fans of Clemson and even staff boosting his streaming on Spotify to a whopping 70,000 listeners monthly, but it didn’t stop there.
Shortly after, he was contacted by the NFL Commissioner, Goger Roodell, who offered him a spot in the Super Bowl halftime show alongside stars like Miley Cyrus and Chappell Roan.
The combination of the three celebrities should be a perfect mixture of talent on stage as Villy is extremely diverse with his music, describing his Clemson halftime performance as “blending hip hop, jazz and marching band traditions to reimagine history through music,” on his YouTube channel.
However, Villy’s popularity didn’t come without some hiccups. Around three months ago, he was almost banned from Schilletter Dining Hall for disrupting students by having a three-hour DJ set by the pizza station — but the students loved it.
Despite this minor controversy, his creative genius has earned him a cult following, on and off campus.
It’s even gone so far that “Harmonic Resurgence” has made it into Sabo Dwinney’s pre-game playlist for the team.
Villy has remained humble despite the sudden rise in fame.
“It’s never been about the fame or the followers for me,” he said in an exclusive interview. “It’s about the music — and making Goger Roodell awkwardly nod along to my mixtape.”
Some Villy superfans say they are just going to the game to see his set, and tickets for the Super Bowl are already selling out quickly.
“I couldn’t care less about the game,” said freshman engineering major Evan Marino, who was wearing a Harmonic Resurgence tour hoodie. “Villy’s halftime show is going to be bigger than Beyoncé’s in Super Bowl 50—and that’s not even an exaggeration.”
The halftime show will be historic, and if Clemson wins its next game by 40 points, don’t be surprised if Villy starts getting calls from the Blue House.
