Residents of the Lightsey Bridge residential community are subject to a 6 p.m. curfew until further notice in order to curb crime in the area. University, state and federal officials have made the drastic decision in order to avoid a descent into anarchy, according to a statement released by the university.
All residents must return to their apartments by 6 p.m. or face arrest by university S.W.A.T. and K9 units, who are patrolling the area at all times.
“We are committed to safety here at Clemson, and while the rest of the campus is a modern-day utopia, the Lightsey Bridge area has fallen victim to an invasion of criminal activity,” explained Chief Hoover of the Clemson University Police Department. “We are prepared to take any measures necessary to instill order at Lightsey Bridge.”
Lightsey Bridge experienced a 112% increase in crime over the past year, contributing to 98% of reported crimes at the university. Crimes have ranged from petty violations like littering to more violent incidents that have inspired fear in residents.
“As soon as I lock my door behind me, I make a beeline straight to the bridge to campus,” said Charlie Harris, sophomore finance major. “If I’m studying at Cooper until late at night, I just stay the night there. It’s not worth attempting the walk back.”
The curfew comes after the student housing complex was awarded “#1 Place for Fugitives to Escape To” by The Princeton Review. The runner up was “Literally Anywhere in Columbia.”
